Senior Laura Middel and freshman Chloe Goyette each found a path to the championship match at the Utah State Aggie Invitational over the weekend. In the end, it was the newcomer, Goyette, from Yakima, Washington posting a 6-3, 6-1 win to capture the singles title.
Goyette's path to the finals started with a 6-0, 6-3 win over CMU's Emily Beckley. The product of Yakima, Washington defeated Utah State's Hannah Jones 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, before knocking off Utah State's Monika Van de Vondel 7-6(8), 3-0 retired in the semis. Goyette rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the opening set to force a tiebreak. In the tiebreaker, Goyette fended off seven set points to win 10-8.
"I am proud of Chloe Goyette for stepping up the level and expectations of the team," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "Tennis is an individual sport until college and being a good, selfless teammate is a part that some tennis players never figure out. I knew Chloe was mentally mature, and physically had the game to have an immediate impact on our program. As a freshman, she has done a tremendous job joining her new team and being comfortable leading by example."
Middel advanced with an opening-round victory over Mikala Lowrance of Southern Utah 6-1, 6-2, before winning her quarterfinal match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision over Utah State's Sabrina Demerath. The native of Hoogezand, Netherlands dispatched Kristen Kirby of Colorado Mesa 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to move into the finals.
"I am always proud of Laura Middel," Reeves said. "She carries a lot of weight for her team as a truly amazing team captain. Laura put forth a great effort this weekend reaching the finals in both singles and doubles."
Middel combined with Naomi Holopainen in doubles play where the duo eventually lost 6-4 in the championship match against Utah State.
