Cats host Northern Colorado Saturday morning at 9 am
The top of the order came through.
Montana State captured the doubles point then recorded singles wins at the top four ladder positions to win a crucial Big Sky tennis match against Eastern Washington on Friday. The victory raises MSU to 3-3 in Big Sky play ahead of another key contest against Northern Colorado on Saturday.
On a Chamber of Commerce day on the school's outdoor courts, the youthful Bobcats overcame nerves and a competitive Eagles team. "I thought we played a little tight, but we fought through it," said Bobcat coach Jared Burnham. "Harry James and Alex Flink really played well. It was a good team effort."
The doubles competition gave MSU a boost. "We've been playing well in practice in doubles," Burnham said. James and Flink teamed for a victory that gave MSU the doubles point. Then after Eastern's Eduardo Bringold earned a singles win at No. 5 over Mateus Ceolin, the Cats captured three straight matches for the win.
First, Flink, a freshman, beat Wacil Bendjelti. Then James, MSU's only senior, won against Vuk Vickovic. Then Kellen Bates won the clincher at No. 1, 6-0, 7-6 over Victor Pereira.
"It was a good win for us, and sets up a big match tomorrow," Burnham said. The MSU-UNC match begins at 9 am at the MSU Outdoor Courts.
