Bobcat sophomore becomes third MSU player ever to finish in league's top three
Sophomore Jaylee Tait (69-72-75-216) finished tied for third, the best finish by a Bobcat in the last four seasons, leading Montana State to seventh place at the 2016 Big Sky Women's Golf Championships in Boulder City, Nev., on Wednesday.
Behind Tait, Montana State's three seniors posted strong finishing rounds. Haylee Folkvord finished tied for 25th with a 224, Kati Greear's 226 was good for a tie for 29th, and Lauren Hausauer posted a three-round total of 230 to finish tied for 30th. Junior Janelle Reali finished tied for 45th, with a 233.
With the team in contention for a team title for much of the first two rounds and Tait squarely locked in the medalist chase, MSU coach Brittany Basye said the her squad had emotions to deal with Wednesday. "They were nervous heading into this round," she said. "We had some ups and downs, but they still managed to shoot under 300 as a team today and I'm proud of that."
Tait grabs the headlines for MSU at this year's championships – "Jaylee played great and gained great experience to push her into a strong final two seasons as a Bobcat," Basye said – but MSU's coach was especially pleased for her seniors. "I'm proud of how those three seniors finished," she said. "We played our best golf of the year this week, and that's a great tribute to the whole team and especially the seniors."
Tait's third-place finish made MSU history. She is only the third Bobcat to finish in the top three at a conference championship – Paige Crawford won medalist honors in 2013 and Jen McGregor did so in 1995, and McGregor also finished tied for third a year earlier. Tait's finish earned her all-tournament honors.
