MSU posts solid second-day effort
A steady hand at the top and improvement everywhere else boosted Montana State into fifth place after the second round of the 2016 Big Sky Conference Women's Golf Championships in Boulder City, Nev., on Tuesday.
Jaylee Tait followed her spectacular opening-round 69 with an even par 72 on Tuesday to maintain the tournament lead. Her margin is slim after Idaho's Sophie Hausmann registered a tournament-record 65 (-7), whiel NAU's Sierra Bezdicek matched Tait's score to stand at 143 with one round remaining.
Bobcat coach Brittany Basye said the improvement from round one to two was as much mental as physical. "I'm very proud of these five ladies," Basye said. "I've been saying all year that they are this good, we just needed to make it happen all on the same day. They played smart today, and rolled putts in and made some great saves."
While Tait stays in the tournament lead and the headlines, her teammates combined to post a 289, Montana State's best-ever Big Sky Tournament round. Lauren Hausauer shot a one-unde r71, Haylee Folkvord was even par 72, Janelle Reali shot a 74, and Kati Greear settled in for a 75. Each of the four improved over their first-round efforts by at least three strokes.
Basye liked her team's ability to execute shots on Tuesday. "We've talked about following a good tee shot or chip or iron shot with a good putt," she said. "They followed good shots with good putts, and that kind of consistency leads to good scores."
Folkvord moved into a tie for 26th with a two-round total of 151. Greear and Reali are tied for 31st at 153, while Hausauer's 154 leaves her tied for 35th.
More of the same is what Basye is hoping for during Wednesday's closing round. "I'm happy for them, but we have one day left. We need to play the same game and stick to our plan."
