Montana State captured Nos. 2 and 3 doubles for the opening point of the match and followed that effort with five straight singles victories to post a 6-1 win over Portland State, Saturday night for its second consecutive Big Sky Conference win.
"I'm proud of the way the team competed," said MSU first-year head coach Jon Reeves. "In a match, you always have physical and mental lapses, but we recognized them early and did a great job getting back to the positives."
MSU's No. 2 doubles tandem of Laura Middel and Naomi Holopainen won the first match of the contest with a 6-2 win over PSU's Dane Vorster and Taylor Rees. The Bobcats won the doubles point at the No. 3 spot as the duo of Linda Vink and Shelby Cerkovnik combined for a 6-2 victory over Kelsey Frey and Alana Chaplin.
Sophomore Angelina Philippova put Montana State up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Middel quickly followed with a straight set 6-4, 6-0 decision over Siena Peri. Holopainen secured the match for the Bobcats with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Vorster at the top spot. Also earning wins for MSU were Jessica Brycki and Vink.
"Across the board we played tough, smart points," Reeves said. "It was a good night."
Montana State will travel to Missoula next weekend to face Montana and Lewis-Clark State.
