Bengals bring high-scoring guard tandem to the Fieldhouse
Montana State head coach Brian Fish's message to his team Friday was as simple as it was clear.
"We've got to guard," Fish said as his team prepared to meet Idaho State on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm in Worthington Arena. The message was equal parts requiem and reset, a response to Weber State's 54.5 percent shooting game against the Cats on Thursday and preparation for ISU's dynamic guard tandem of Ethan Telfair and Brandon Boyd.
Thursday's league-opening loss extended a troubling trend for MSU. Bobcat opponents have hit at least half their field goal attempts in four straight games, and five of the last six. Weber's 17 treys were the most by a Bobcat opponent this season, and the second-most by a Big Sky team this year.
The challenge Saturday is equally stern. Telfair, a senior who scored 31 points against the Cats last year, averages 16.6 points for the Bengals this season. He is joined by freshman sensation Brandon Boyd, who averages 12.2 this season.
"They've got really, really good guards," Fish said. "They played (at Montana on Thursday) with four guards. Telfair is one of the best players in our league, and I've told a lot of coaching friends of mine that he's going to play for a long time and make a lot of money somewhere. He's that good."
While a couple of individual Bengals stand out for their offensive work, Fish said that ISU's defense poses a severe challenge. "(ISU coach Bill Evans) plays a lot of zone," he said. "They're committed to it, and very active in it. Last year they box-and-oned Tyler some, so we'll see a lot of different defensive looks."
Tipoff is 2 pm in Worthington Arena, and a limited number of Bobcat Brunch Garden Tickets remain for the special New Year's Eve offer that begins at noon. For information check here.
