Banner Night for Bobcat Women
12/2/2016 10:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball
It was a banner night for Montana State women's basketball.
Celebrating its 2015-16 Big Sky Conference title with the unfurling of the first blue and gold banner to hang from the Worthington Arena rafters since 2003, the current cast of Bobcats raised its level of play in the second quarter, en route to a convincing 75-44 win over Carroll College, Friday night in front of 1,426 spectators.
Montana State (4-3) connected on nine of its opening ten attempts and finished the first stanza shooting a blistering 77 percent from the field. The Bobcats held a 12-point advantage heading into the second quarter. MSU expanded its lead to 38-20 at intermission.
"Even though we put 26 points on the board in the first quarter, I thought we were a little flat," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "I thought in the second quarter when Margreet (Barhoum) went in we really picked things up, especially defensively. She really brought good energy to the court and it was contagious."
Carroll College was able to chip the lead down to 42-30 at the 5:59 mark of the third quarter, but the Bobcats responded with a 16-3 run to close out the frame and secure the victory.
"We're at our best when we are sharing the ball," Binford said. "Offensively, we were right on track. I liked our tempo, and we had a chance to get fresh legs into the game. It was nice to see everyone make a contribution."
Four Bobcats hit double-digits paced by Peyton Ferris with 15 points. The Twin Bridges product ended the contest converting seven-of-ten from the floor. Also in double-figures were Oliana Squires 12, Hannah Caudill 11, and Riley Nordgaard 10.
MSU held a commanding 46-27 advantage under the boards led by freshman Blaire Braxton with a game-high ten rebounds.
The Montana State defense limited the Saints to 25 percent from the field and closed down Carroll's post play as Cassidy Hashley and Hannah Dean combined for just six points on nine percent shooting.
The Saints were paced by Bailey Pasta with ten points.
Montana State will host Seattle U at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Worthington Arena.
