MSU hangs close throughout in 92-84 loss
Utah's size proved too much for Montana State to overcome Thursday in a 92-84 Utes win in Salt Lake City.
Sophomore Tyler Hall led the Bobcats with 22 points, his sixth 20-point effort in eight games. Senior Quinton Everett added a career-high 20 points, while junior Zach Green chipped in 15 points. Utah was too much inside, though, scoring 52 points in the paint and out-rebounding the Bobcats 50-to-31 to accentuate their height advantage.
"That was the longest, most athletic team we've seen," said Bobcat coach Brian Fish.
Utah closed the first half on a 6-0 spurt to grab a double-digit 47-35 lead at the intermission. The Bobcats battled, pulling to within 52-49 on a Zach Green three-pointer with just less than 15 minutes to play, but in the end "we missed too many layups and gave up too many close shots," said MSU coach Brian Fish. "We fought. We could have quit four or five times but we refused. We showed a lot of toughness."
Devon Daniels scored 18 points for Utah, but Kyle Kuzma led the home team's effort. He narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 16 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists. The Utes shot 48.5% from the floor to MSU's 39.4%, but the Bobcats kep the free throw margin close. Utah finished 23-of-30 from the line, while the Cats were 20-of-27.
Fish said his team's performance offers both hope and frustration. "We got beat 20 on the boards and missed a lot of layups, but we still had a chance to get back in it. I think there's still a lot left in the tank for how much we can improve."
The tone was set early, with Utah connecting on its first six shots and MSU also enjoying fast start as the teams raced to a 13-13 tie in the opening minutes. "Any time you make shots early you can get into trading baskets instead of hunkering down and playing defense. That's a sign of immaturity in a team. We'll watch the film and learn from that."
Hall and Sam Neumann paced MSU on the boards with five each. MSU forced 17 Utah turnovers and converted those into 17 points, while giving the ball away just 11 times. Montana State falls to 5-3 on the season, while Utah is now 5-1.
