UWM win spoils historic night by Tyler Hall, who pours in 42 points
After 32 minutes of torrid offense from Milwaukee and a raging comeback from Montana State that covered seven minutes, much of Monday night's action boiled down to a missed layup by UWM's Brock Stull. His teammate Brett Prahl grabbed it, effectively ending a contest that finished as an 83-78 road victory for the Panthers.
"That was a big play," Montana State coach Brian Fish acknowledged. "At the end of the day the game comes down to they beat us on the boards and wore us out there, again, and we've got to change that."
The Panthers (4-5) left Worthington Arena with their first road win under first-year coach LaVall Jordan, in the process handing MSU (5-4) its first home loss of 2016-17 and off-setting a spectacular night by Bobcat sophomore Tyler Hall. His 42 points is tied for second-most in Bobcat history. Milwaukee out-rebounded the Bobcats 37-to-25, MSU's second straight double-digit rebound deficit, turning its 11 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points. Prahl led all players with eight boards.
For most of the game, though, it appeared the final minutes would be post-script. Milwaukee knocked the Cats on their heels out of the gates with a three-point barrage. UWM hit its first four threes, not missing until seven-and-a-half minutes into the game.
The Cats hung in, largely due to Tyler Hall's hot shooting, but Fish said Milwaukee's quick start was important. "They came out with more focus," he said. "I've got to get our defense in better position to get stops, so a lot of that falls on me. Some of the guys hit some shots that we wanted them to shoot, and when everything got going they kept knocking them down. Credit them, they had guys step up."
Hall agreed with Fish. "They were just tougher than us," the sophomore sharp-shooter said. The Panthers used a 10-3 spurt closing the first half to grab a 44-38 advantage at the intermission, punctuated by a tip-in just before the period expired, then opened the second half with a 12-6 run. The Panthers eventually pushed the lead to 19 points, 66-47, with 13:35 to play.
Fueled by a career night by Hall, the Bobcats stormed back. He hit two free throws with 5:59 to play to pull the Cats within 71-59, then hit a jumper, a short follow shot, and a layup on consecutive possessions. Hall out-scored the Panthers 11-3 in that stretch, and after Zach Green hit a pair of free throws Hal's short jumper with 1:55 to play pulled MSU to within two at 74-72.
Then came one of the game's key moments. Stull missed the contested layup, and Prahl's rebound triggered a new UWM possession. With the shot clock winding down, Jeremiah Bell was fouled, and he knocked down both free throws. The Panthers closed the game by hitting seven of eight free throws.
Milwaukee finished the night shooting 53% from the field, 65% (13-for-20) from three-point range, and 78% (18-for-23) from the charity stripe. MSU shot 45% from the floor, hit nine threes (six by Hall) on 26 attempts, and finished 11-for-13 from the line. Milwaukee out-rebounded the Cats by a dozen, but MSU stayed in the game by forcing 14 Panthers turnovers and giving the ball away just six times.
Fish said the hole MSU dug itself was simply too deep. "When you put yourself down 17, 18 points everything gets magnified. We put ourselves down so we had to get stops, so when you give up (an) offensive rebound it stands out."
Fish had praise for his star guard. "It's a great performance," he said. "It's not unexpected. Knowing Tyler the way I know Tyler he'd rather have two points and get the win." Moments earlier, Hall had said the same thing. "No disrespect," he said when questioned about his performance, "but we lost."
