Bobcat Post Play Dominates Second Exhibition Victory Over Colorado Christian

With the graduation of 2015-16 Big Sky Conference MVP and post player Jasmine Hommes, Montana State head coach Tricia Binford knew she had some big shoes to fill.
With the graduation of 2015-16 Big Sky Conference MVP and post player Jasmine Hommes, Montana State head coach Tricia Binford knew she had some big shoes to fill. In MSU's 93-53 victory over Colorado Christian on Saturday night in Worthington Arena she found an answer.
Behind the efforts of preseason Big Sky MVP pick Peyton Ferris, along with freshmen Blaire Braxton and Madeline Smith, and sophomore Ashton Siegner, the foursome dominated the Cougars accounting for 55 points, two more than CCU scored as a team. In addition, the quartet combined to shoot 77 percent from the field, connecting on 23-of-30 from the field.
"Obviously, I was very pleased with our post play," Binford said. "They were solid and consistent around the basket and did a great job finishing. It was a step forward from Thursday night's game. You also have to give credit to our guards. They delivered the ball very well."
Braxton, a product of Highlands Ranch, Colo., led all scorers with 18 points, converting eight-of-nine from the floor. Also in double-figures were Smith 15 and Ferris 14.
Montana State held Colorado Christian scoreless for the first five minutes of the contest and took an 11-0 advantage on a pair of Smith free throws. The Bobcats held a 24-11 lead after the first quarter and a 45-24 margin at intermission.
In the second half, MSU took its largest lead at 93-52 on a Smith layup with two-minutes, 5-seconds remaining.
"Looking at the positives, we had a great assist/turnover ratio and did a nice job cutting down on the turnovers from Thursday night," Binford said. "However, we gave up too many offensive boards, and for the second straight game, put our opponents on the line more than ourselves. That may be from playing the two games in three days, but it something that we certainly need to address."
The Bobcats finished the game with 19 assists, while committing 12 turnovers. Junior point-guard Hannah Caudill dished out a game-high five assists.
MSU out-rounded CCU 46-39, but gave up 21 offensive boards to the Cougars. The Bobcats were led under the glass by Braxton with eight rebounds and Annika Lai with seven.
Montana State will open its regular-season schedule at Utah on Nov. 12 in Salt Lake City.
