Bobcats one stroke off leader after first round and are hanging close after 36 holes
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Montana State women's golf was a stroke shy off the leader following the opening round and sits in third in the team standings after 36 holes at Silver Creek Valley Country Club Monday, Oct. 31, in the SCU Colby Invitational.
The Bobcats' first round total of 310 put them one behind host Santa Clara, but the Broncos' second-round 297 propelled them to the lead at 606. MSU shot a second-round 313 for a total 623 strokes, 11 back from second-place CSU Northridge (311-301-612). Fellow Big Sky member Weber State trails MSU in fourth by two strokes.
"The course is playing long because of the wet conditions, so we were having to use long irons and hybrids into the greens," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We'll need to get more birdies and less bogeys. The greens are rolling nice, so we just need to trust our strokes and knock them in."
MSU junior Jaylee Tait cruised through the first 18 holes, notching a 1-over-par 73 to sit in a tie for second. She wrapped up the day with a second-round 78 and leads the Bobcats in fifth at 6-over 151.
After shooting an 80 in her opening round, senior Janelle Reali fired a 2-over 74 for a 154 through 36 holes, which puts her in a tie for eighth. Freshman Kelly Hooper began the day with a 4-over-par 76 and followed it with an 81 and is tied for 15th.
Playing in their second events of the fall, sophomore Natassja Meredith and freshman Delaney Elliott completed 36 holes Monday for the Bobcats. Elliott fired a 161 (81-80) and Meredith scored a 166 (84-82) for the 'Cats.
"We need to trust our yardages and commit," Basye said. "We had some great chances at birdies that we just need to finish. I feel good about tomorrow and hope that we will finish strong."
The Bobcats begin the final round of the SCU Colby Invitational at 9:15 a.m. MDT, Tuesday, Nov. 1.
