Jaylee Tait leads Montana State golfers after first two rounds in California
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Junior Jaylee Tait sits in a tie for 11th on the individual leaderboard to lead the Montana State women's golf team after the first two rounds of the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Classic Club.
The Bobcats sat among the top five throughout the first round of play, but are in eighth following the second round of action with a combined 625 (308-317).
Tait fired consecutive team-best rounds of 74 and 75, which puts her at 5-over-par for the tournament. Freshman Kelly Hooper follows her in the team standings and is tied for 27th as she sits at 9-over 155 (76-79).
Remaining Bobcats that wrapped up play Saturday included freshman Delaney Elliott who's tied for 42nd with a 160 (77-83), freshman Coral Schulz who's tied for 47th after shooting 161 (80-81) and sophomore Clare Dittemore in 67th with a 174 (90-84).
"I'm proud of Jaylee for hanging around in both rounds," MSU head coach Brittany Basye said. "Kelly and Delaney played good first rounds, but other than Jaylee, the second round defeated us. We couldn't get anything going. The mental errors we made today cannot happen."
Santa Clara leads the team standings with a combined 590, Hawaii trails in second at 593 strokes and Cal Poly is in third with a 594. Annie Freman of Santa Clara is the individual leader at 6-under-par (70-68) through two rounds.
The Bobcats are currently ahead of Cal-State Northridge (628), UC-Riverside (633), Cal-State Bakersfield (635) and Montana (637) going into the final day of action.
"Tomorrow we will have to be committed 100 percent, when we aren't we shoot above our average," Basye said. "These ladies need to realize their strengths and play to those. We have so many strengths we just need to believe in them."
The third round of the Intercollegiate begins at 8:30 a.m. MDT at the Classic Club.
