Cats improve in round two, look for big move in closing round
Four Bobcats marked in the 70s as Montana State moved up one spot after the second day of the three-day Big Sky Conference Golf Championships in Chandler, Ariz.
Junior Haylee Folkvord, sophomore Janelle Reali and freshman Jaylee Tait each carded a 76 in round two. Reali's two-round total of 152 leaves her in a 15th-place tie, while Folkvord is one stroke back and tied for 18th. Junior Kati Greear shot a 78 on Monday and her 154 is tied for 21st, and Tait is in a group at 157, which is tied for 33rd. Pari Keller improved by nine strokes to fire a 77, and is tied for 45th with a two-round 163.
"We played very well on the first 12 holes," Bobcat coach Brittany Basye said of her team's second round, "but after that we let the course get the best of us. We'll need to put a front nine and a back nine together tomorrow."
The Cats played +10 on par three holes during the tournament's first two rounds, with the 3.25 stroke average standing third among league teams. Folkvord's 24 pars on the tourney is among the top 13 players in that category.
With 11 of the 12 Big Sky teams facing their final round of the season on Tuesday, Basye said that a sense of urgency shouldn't be a problem. "We practice all fall and spring for this tournament," she said. "We have tomorrow to play the best we possibly can. The girls are capable of it by playing smart and focusing on every shot and keeping their heads in the game. All five are capable of playing great golf on this course, and I'm ready for them to show it in the final round."
