Bobcats Eighth After Day One at Big Sky Golf Championships

Janelle Reali and Kati Greear each fired a first-round 76 and Montana State stands in eighth place after day one at the Big Sky Golf Championships at Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
Reali and Greear share 17th place with four other golfers, and Haylee Folkvord's 77 has her tied for 23rd. Jaylee Tait shot an 81 and Pari Keller an 86 to round out MSU's scoring on the day.
Bobcat coach Brittany Basye sees better times ahead over the tournament's final two rounds. "This isn't the start that we were looking for, but we played better on the back nine and I liked how the players showed some fight to keep scores below 80."
Montana State recorded nine birdies in the tourney's first round, the second-highest total on the day (three squads fired 10 birdies). Jaylee Tait led the way with three. Haylee Folkvord's steady play resulted in 11 pars.
Basye is looking for an improved mental approach on Tuesday. "When a player has a bad hole, I want her to trust her game and know she will have good holes, too," she said. "We need to come out with confidence (Monday) and play one shot at a time. I want to see them relax and play their games."
Montana State's 310 is two strokes behind Eastern Washington and three behind Montana. Sacramento State jumped out of the gates with a first-round 298 to take the lead, while Southern Utah is one shot back and NAU just three off the pace.
Keller tees off at 8 am Monday, Tait at 8:09, Folkvord at 8:18, Greear at 8:27 and Reali at 8:36.
