MSU falls in Cheney on Thursday
Marcus Colbert's best efforts weren't enough.
The Bobcat junior scored 25 points in the second half, but Eastern Washington used a 21-7 run surrounding halftime to blow open a close game en route to a 92-68 win over the Bobcats in Cheney on Thursday.
EWU's dazzling array of offensive weapons was on full display at Reese Court. Venky Jois scored a game-high 27 points, Tyler Harvey hit four three-pointers on his way to 20 points, and Ognjen Miljkovic scored from every offensive quadrant to net 15. EWU's starting lineup played until the final minute of a game it led by more than 20 points for most of the second half.
"They played really well and competed, and we didn't," said Bobcat coach Brian Fish. "We didn't execute, we got selfish, and that cost us the game."
The net result was a dominant win for the Eagles. Eastern shot 60% in the second half, 52.5% in the game, out-rebounded MSU 42-to-33, and turned the ball over only 10 times.
Colbert was a bright spot for the Bobcats, finishing with a career-high 27 points playing within an hour of his hometown of Post Falls, Idaho. He also dished out four assists. Stephan Holm and Michael Dison were each in double-digits as well, but scored all their points in the first half. Eric Norman blocked a shot and grabbed nine boards for MSU.
The first half was played on mostly even terms, but Eastern closed strong while the Bobcats scuffled on their way into the locker room. The Eagles scored on four straight possessions – a 9-2 run – heading into intermission, with only an Eric Norman three-pointer preventing the lead from growing to double-digits. Ognjen Miljkovic hit two triples and a layup in the final minutes before halftime, and Drew Brandon converted three free throws.
The Bobcats defended Eastern's diverse offense effectively in the first half, limiting the Eagles to 44.8% shooting and 37 points. MSU's struggles came on the offensive end, where 22 of the team's 28 points were scored by Dison (10) and Holm (12).
The Bobcats drop to 7-21 on the season, 4-12 in the Big Sky, while Eastern is 21-7 and 12-3. MSU visits Idaho on Saturday at 2 pm MT, while Eastern Washington hosts Montana in what could serve as the de fact Big Sky regular season title game.
