Utah State Closes with Three Straight Singles Wins for Victory
Utah State closed the match with three straight singles wins to claim a 4-3 victory over Montana State in men's tennis on Sunday in Bozeman.
Montana State claimed the doubles point, then after Utah won at No. 4 singles the Bobcats took wins at No. 1 (Andre Napoliatano beat Jack Swindells 7-6, 6-3) and No. 3 (Javier Martin-Morillas def. Karan Salwan 6-4, 3-6, 6-1) to pull to within one match of a third straight triumph over Utah State.
"Everyone played well in doubles," said Bobcat coach Jared Burnham. "I knew we'd have to take the doubles point to have a chance."
USU's Dennis Baumgartner out-lasted Niklas Brandes at No. 2 singles, which proved pivotal. Utah State's sophomore topped the Bobcat senior 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in a showdown of Germans. The Aggies then won in straight sets at the bottom two ladder positions to seal the win.
"Javy and Andre played really well," Burnham said. "Nik struggled, but he battled like crazy and I'm proud of that. This was a close match, exactly as we all expected."
The Bobcats return to Big Sky play on Friday, hosting Idaho State.
