12/10/2015 9:19:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Track & Field
Pat Eckerson spent the afternoon of Saturday, December 5 in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, serving as the head judge for the throwing events at MSU's blue and gold scrimmage for track and field. After returning to his home in Butte, Eckerson died of natural causes on Sunday morning.
Eckerson competed for Montana State's track and field team as a thrower from 2007-2010 and was honored as All-Big Sky Conference in the weight throw and hammer. In his final season as a Bobcat, he placed second in both events at the conference championships and participated in the first round of the NCAA championships.
"Pat was a fierce competitor and a reliable hard trainer, especially with the weights," MSU's throwing coach Mike Carignan said of Eckerson. "He was reserved and polite, an intellectual. He never swore or used sarcasm, and had a great sense of humor. He was fascinated with language, music, tools, and was always building something. After graduation he continued to support our program as an official, as he did the day before he passed away."
Services will take place Saturday, Dec. 12 at St. Ann's Parish in Butte, Mont. Public viewing will begin at 10 a.m., with the Memorial service at 11 a.m., followed by a gathering in the reception hall.
