Strong Second Half Lifts Bobcats to Victory in Exhibition Play

“We came out too rushed and were playing faster than we needed,” Binford said. “Once we slowed the pace a little bit we were able to convert in transition and we started to feed off each other.”
Once Montana State head coach Tricia Binford got her team to take a breath and slow its torrid tempo, the Bobcats settled in for a dominating 79-51 win over Montana Tech, Wednesday night in exhibition play.
"We came out too rushed and were playing faster than we needed," Binford said. "Once we slowed the pace a little bit we were able to convert in transition and we started to feed off each other."
Montana Tech jumped out to a 15-11 advantage after the opening period, before Montana State responded with a 17-6 second stanza sparked by Lindsay Stockton with seven points.
The Bobcats pushed the margin to 17 points on a Riley Nordgaard triple with 51-seconds remaining in the third quarter. MSU built its largest lead at 79-46 with 56-seconds remaining on a Margreet Barhoum three-pointer.
"We were able to establish our post play and use our size to our advantage," Binford said. "We struggled converting down low in the first half, but did a much better job in the second half."
Bobcat senior Jasmine Hommes paced MSU with a game-high 18 points, while adding 14 rebounds. Nordgaard, a newcomer from Canby, Minn., chipped in 16 points and 15 boards, while Stockton and Barhoum added 15 and ten points, respectively.
"Jasmine had an off night and still managed a double-double," Binford joked. "She is such a constant presence and she has really added a rebounding element to her game.
"Riley is a playmaker," Binford added. "She brings us a spark and physicality at the guard spot."
For the game, MSU shot 38 percent from the field and owned a sizeable 71-31 advantage under the glass. The Orediggers shot 32 percent from the floor and connected on eight 3-pointers.
Montana Tech was led by Sammy McGree and Shayla Mack with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Montana State will open its regular-season against Seattle University in Key Arena on Nov. 13.
