More PRs and qualifiers highlight weekend in Missoula

Each weekend seems to bring something different during a Montana Spring, but Montana State Track and Field likes to keep a steady rate of success. On a beautiful, sunny Missoula Saturday, the Bobcats kept their momentum at the Montana Open at Dornblaser Field. Despite a smaller roster because the MSU seniors were partaking in commencement, and another group competing on Sunday, May 4, in Stanford, California, the Bobcats still finished with 26 medal finishes, including six first-place performances, five of which belonged to the women.
Chantel Jaeger had another stand-out weekend, picking up three gold medals on her rival's turf. Jaeger crossed the finish line in 55.00 marking a lifetime best in the 400 for the junior. She also took first in the 200 in 24.45, while teammate Chelsea Bourque hung with her for second place in 25.35. Jaeger's third medal came in the 4x100 where anchored and teamed up with Bourque, Iris Hardarson, and Paige Squire.
Like Jaeger, sprinter/hurdler Paige Squire picked up a PR of her own. She finally broke through the 60-second mark in the 400 hurdles in 59.96. Alisa Gilchrist also notched a lifetime best, as well as a Big Sky qualifying mark in the high jump, launching herself to a height of 5-07. In the hammer throw, Madison Wills bested her previous distance by one one-hundredth of a meter in the hammer throw to finish in second place with 159-07 (48.65m).
In addition to Gilchrist two javelin throwers also punched their ticket to Flagstaff, Arizona, for the Big Sky Championships May 14-17. Dawn Blevins and Leslie Gappa, both who sat inside the top-20 of the league's descending order list, finally surpassed the 41.00m mark to become official for the conference meet. Blevins finished fourth with 136-04 (41.55m) while Gappa came in fifth with 136-02 (41.50m).
On the men's side, Trevor Polson had an impressive second place finish behind unattached teammate Jake Turner in the 3,000 steeplechase. Polson clocked in with a season best 9:37.32.
Powhattan Williamson jumped about the "PR Express" with his own lifetime best in the short hurdles, clocking in at 14.73. In the 400, Aaron Johnston did the same with a time of 50.03.
The lone first-place performance for the men belonged to Michael Tobin in the 100. Tobin crossed the finish line in 10.92.
"This meet came at the end of a very grueling week for these student-athletes," said assitant coach Tom Eitel. "To go out and compete, after finals week especially, and do what they did today was great. We had great weather, probably the best we've seen this spring and I think it helped give these kids the extra push they needed today."
Five runners will participate in the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday, May 4, while the rest of the team will get one more chance to earn Big Sky qualifiers. They'll return to Missoula one more time for the Tom Gage Classic on Friday, May 9.
