Only two weekends left to qualify for Big Sky Championships
Montana State Track and Field has officially hit the accelerator. With only two weeks remaining until May 14, when the Big Sky Outdoor Championships kick off in Flagstaff, Ariz., the Bobcats are going into overdrive and taking the success of the 2014 season to the next level. On Saturday, May 3, a group will travel across the divide to Missoula, Mont. for the Montana Open at Dornblaser Field. Also, on Sunday, May 4, a quintet of runners will make an appearance at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
Headed into the weekend, 51 Bobcats have earned their Big Sky automatic qualifiers while an additional 40 are still ranked among the top-20 of their event with potential to punch their ticket to Arizona. In addition, there are three events in the league that are led by the Blue and Gold. The women's 4x400 relay recorded the fastest time of the season thus far, clocking a time of 3:42.60, almost two seconds ahead of Sacramento State. Chris Wilson leads the pack in the 100 (10.52) while Jake Mushaben has the best distance in the long jump (23-08.75).
After a clean sweep of the Griz back on April 26, MSU will face off with their rival again, along with Carroll, Great Falls, MSU Billings and Rocky Mountain. Both the men's and women's hammer throw will take place on Friday, May 2, with the remainder of the meet commencing at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday with the field events and 11:15 a.m. on the track.
"We still have a lot of kids right on the cuff," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "I say this each season but as we get down to these final few opporotunities, we really need to take advantage of each competition, as individuals and as a team."
At the Payton Jordan Invitational, hosted by Stanford, five Bobcats will get a chance to compete at the premier showcase for long distance runners. Matt Tex and Grant Grosvenor, who are ranked fourth and fifth in the 800, respectively, in the conference will race in the event in California and look to pick up lifetime bests in their races. Cristian Soratos will compete in his home state in the 1,500. He ranks third in the Big Sky in the event right now with a time of 3:45.86. Heather Demorest and Kaylee Schmitz will represent the women's team in Stanford. Demorest will compete in the 3,000 steeplechase, while Schmitz will race in the 800. Demorest is the current program record holder in the steeplechase, which she set earlier this season with a time of 10:22.32.
"The Payton Jordan will be great for this group of distance runners," said Kennedy. "Anytime we're able to send anyone to compete among some of the nation's best, it can only result in great things, whether performances, experience or both."
The running events at the Payton are slated for a 4:40 p.m. (MDT) start and live results can be found here.
