Montana State Track and Field had five runners competing at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday, May 4, and all five will return to Bozeman with some of the best performances of their season and for some, the best of their career. The Payton Jordan, hosted by Stanford, is one of the more prestigious distance festivals of the season.
Heather Demorest saw another significant time drop in the 3,000 steeplechase. The Darby, Montana native crossed the finish line at Cobb Track in 10:15.75 to finish fourth in her heat. Not only did her time mark her second lifetime best of the season, it also reset the program record. Demorest set the program record back on April 17, also in the Golden State at the Mt. SAC Relays with a time of 10:22.32. With that time, she now ranks 23rd in the nation and 11th in the West Region.
Grant Grosvenor and Matthew Tex both ran in the fifth section of the 800, faring quite well. Tex won the section with a season best time of 1:50.01, followed by Grosvenor in second place with 1:50.25, also a 2014 top-time for the junior. With Tex's win, he now leads the conference in the event, while Grosvenor sits in fourth place. Grosvenor won the Big Sky outdoor title in 2012 and Tex won in 2013.
In the men's 1,500, Cristian Soratos took third in the fifth section, recording a PR time of 3:45.04, which also puts him at the top of the Big Sky rankings.
Kaylee Schmitz ran in the 800, with a strong race to a fourth place finish in her section. After falling to last place during the run, she pushed her way back up to fourth to finish with a time of 2:11.82, an outdoor lifetime best for the sophomore.
"This was a big positive for all us," said head coach Dale Kennedy, who accompanied his distance runners to California. "A lot of these performances will put us in good positions for potential NCAA regional appearances, which is huge. These kids ran well, and represented Montana State even better. There's a lot to be proud of this weekend."
MSU has one meet before the Big Sky Championships. They'll travel to Missoula a final time for the annual Tom Gage Classic on Friday, May 9.
