Montana State finished the Big Sky Championship in sixth place on Tuesday following the conclusion of the final round of 18 at Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. Despite an impressive third place finish after the first two days of play, MSU fell three spots on the final day, but there was still much to be proud of given the improvement of the team over the course of the 2013-14 season. MSU had a three day total of 933 (305-313-315) for 69 over after 54 holes. Portland State took the team championship title with an impressive 290 on the final day for a total of 895 (+31).
Among 55 players, the Bobcats had two top-ten finishers. Kati Greear was the team's highest finisher, placing a career-high fourth.. After placing 40th just one year ago, with 241 (82-82-77), her off-season work clearly paid off. Sitting as high as third place, the sophomore from Moscow, Idaho, carded 225 (74-76-75) to finish only nine over par at the 6,272-yard course. Freshman Janelle Reali, MSU highest finisher in round two, tied for sixth place with 226 (76-73-77) at 10 over. Reali has adjusted to the college game in her debut Blue and Gold season and became a consistent top-three player for Montana State.
Portland State's A Ram Choi took medalist honors, with 211 (70-74-67). Choi tied Paige Crawford 2013 single-round record of 67.
"Kati and Janelle showed consistency," said head coach Brittany Basye. "As a whole we shot below our avaerage and those two in particular really stepped it up across the board."
Last year's Big Sky Conference medalist, Paige Crawford, closed out a stellar collegiate career with a 22nd place finish at Ocotillo. In her final college tournament, she carded a 236 (76-79-81). Also in her senior swan song was Pamela Calderon Rojas. Rojas finished with 250 (79-85-86).
Haylee Folkvord rounded out MSU's roster with a four-stroke drop on the third day but finished with 253 (85-86-82).
"We fought hard today and each player showed me that working hard does, indeed, pay off," said Basye. "Golf is a funny game sometimes and the ball doesn't always do what we want it to.We really lowered our average by a lot this week and I'm happy that we peaked when did. We just need to keep working hard toward more consistency and I'm really proud of what we accomplished these last three days."
Montana State's sixth place finish marks their best since the 2011 season after finishing ninth in 2013 and seventh in 2012. The Bobcats won the Big Sky Conference title back in 1995 and since then, their best finish was third dating back to 1996. The Bobcats' third place position in the first two rounds noted their best two-round score in Basye's tenure and in recent program history. The Big Sky Championship marks the end of the season for Montana State.
