* The Montana State women's basketball team will look to snap its current three-game losing streak when it travels to Eastern Washington on Thursday night and Portland State on Saturday afternoon. MSU swept both squads in early January in Worthington Arena.
* Despite its three-game slide, Montana State is in third place, tied with Sacramento State, Southern Utah and Idaho State - all teams that defeated the Bobcats in the first half of the Big Sky Conference schedule. Montana is one game ahead in second place, while North Dakota - a team MSU defeated in Grand Forks on Jan. 18 - holds the top spot 2 1/2 games in front of the Bobcats.
* MSU needs to shore up its defense. The Bobcats have given up an average of 81.7 points per game in its last three outings.
* With its 78-74 win over Eastern Washington on Jan. 11, the Bobcats now hold a slim 39-38 advantage in the all-time series between the two Big Sky Conference foes. In its meeting earlier this season with the Eagles, senior Ashley Brumwell paced MSU with 26 points and ten rebounds. Also in double-figures were Ausha Cole 12, Kalli Durham 11 and Alexa Dawkins 10. For the game, the Bobcats shot 45 percent from the field, including 52 percent in the second half. EWU was paced by Lexie Nelson with 19 points, while Hayley Hodgins chipped in 18 points, including a four-of-eight effort from three-point range.
* With its 89-78 win over Portland State on Jan. 9, the Bobcats hold a 32-20 margin in the all-time series between the two Big Sky Conference foes. In its meeting earlier this season with the Vikings, senior Ashley Brumwell paced MSU with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jackie Elliott registered 14 points and ten boards. Also in double-digits for MSU were Kalli Durham and Jasmine Hommes with 15 points, each. MSU shot 51% for the game.
* Montana State staged one of the program's greatest second-half comebacks against Montana on Monday, but couldn't get over the hump losing to the Lady Griz in overtime. The Bobcats rallied from 17 points down with 11:58 left to force overtime. Jasmine Hommes scored the last 13 points of regulation to give the Bobcats a shot.
* Senior Ashley Brumwell is listed in five categories in 'Career Active Leaders' throughout the Big Sky Conference rankings. The Hamilton product is listed in career points (1,068), field-goal attempts (1,062), rebounds (601), blocks (119), and games played (111).
* Montana State is ranked ninth in the nation in blocks per game (5.8), 44th in assists per game (16.1), 47th in assist/turnover ratio (1.07) and 48th in turnover margin (+3.17). In Big Sky games only, the Bobcats lead the league averaging 6.0 blocks per game.
* MSU has four players in the top 30 in the BSC in scoring- Brumwell (13.7), Hommes (12.8), Elliott (11.1) and Durham (10.5).
A FULL PLATE:
Ashley Brumwell has a lot on her plate. In addition to her playing gig, the 5th-year senior just completed a student-teaching stint in the math department at Bozeman High and received her undergraduate degree. Brumwell (formerly Albert) notched a career-high 26 points in MSU's win over Eastern Washington on Jan. 11. On Monday night, the Hamilton product posted 12 points and six rebounds vs. UM. She is currently 2nd on MSU's all-time career blocks chart with 119 swats.
SHE'S A KICK:
Jackie Elliott continued her stellar play recording eight points and a team-best 11 rebounds against Montana. In Big Sky action, she is averaging a respectable 12.8 points and 7.3 boards, while shooting 50 percent per contest. Elliott, who was the 2010-11 Montana Gatorade Soccer Player of the Year, and a 16-time All-State Academic pick as a prepster, is majoring in mechanical engineering.
FROM THE TOWN THAT MADE VIOLET BEAUREGARDE FAMOUS:
Miles City product Kalli Durham, who has strong family ties to Montana State (grandfather Lin, Uncle Mick and cousin Casey played for the Bobcat men's team), notched 15 points against the Lady Griz on Monday night, including three 3-pointers. The daughter of a coach and former UM-Western Athletic Director (Mark Durham), she has been in double-digits in 11 games this winter. Durham has recorded 35 career double-figure scoring games in three seasons.
ALL IN THE FAMILY:
Jasmine Hommes has started all 19 games for MSU and is averaging 12.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Against Southern Utah, Hommes posted a career-best 24 points on Jan. 30. On Monday, she poured in 17 points, including the last 13 in regulation. In Big Sky play, Hommes is averaging 14.7 ppg. She also has strong ties to the MSU women's basketball program. She is the niece of former MSU and Big Sky MVP Blythe Hommes-Hintz and former MSU and All-Big Sky performer Brooke Hommes-Svendsen. Hommes' aunts made a combined 130 starts for MSU.
BABY TALK:
After taking last year off on maternity leave, Ausha Cole has returned to the Bobcat line-up. Cole has been in double-digits the last two games, including 12 points at UM. Cole is 3rd in the Big Sky averaging 5.6 assists per game. Her current assist/turnover ratio in BSC play is second-best in the league at +2.2. On a side note, her biggest fan and daughter, Kadence, celebrated her first birthday on Nov. 19, 2013.
DAWK AND STOCK:
Alexa Dawkins has done a nice job coming off the bench this season. The former Bozeman High product is averaging 5.7 points and 3.5 rebounds in league play. Her rebound total is sixth best on the squad. Lindsay Stockton saw ten minutes of action against Montana and converted one triple, while pulling down one rebound. Stockton recorded a Big Sky season-high 14 points against Weber State on Jan. 23. The duo hail from strong athletic lineages. Lindsay is the daughter of NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, while Dawkins' father Dale played football on the University of Miami's 1987 National Championship team. Dawkins later went on to play wide receiver for the New York Jets from 1990-93.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS:
Redshirt freshman Margreet Barhoum is averaging 14.3 minutes per game coming off the bench in Big Sky action. Against Montana, she played seven minutes and posted four points and a rebound. Barhoum is third on the team with 9 3-pointers in Big Sky play. The Edmonds, Wash., recorded a career-high 10 points in MSU's season-opener against Cal State Northridge. A month ago, she registered a career-best six assists in MSU's win over Portland State.
DeNOTE ON DeWIT:
Montana State forward Kayla DeWit matched a career-high 10 points against Southern Utah last Thursday, which included a 6-of-6 performance from the free throw line. Her 4.3 rebound average is 4th best on the team. DeWit hauled down a team-high nine rebounds in MSU's loss at Montana. On the season, DeWit is averaging 12.1 minutes of action as well as 4.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 41 percent from the field and 88 percent at the line.
REDSHIRTING:
Sophomore Peyton Ferris, who averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 rebounds last winter, will redshirt the 2013-14 campaign, according to MSU head coach Tricia Binford. Already on redshirt is junior college transfer and guard Michelle Seitz.
