UND topped MSU in Bozeman last month
Any comment on basketball from Brad Huse comes distinctly from a coach's perspective, an idea evident when Montana State's eighth-year head coach was asked the biggest positive of emerging from a four-games-in-eight-days stretch.
MSU Game Notes vs. North Dakota
"We get to practice," he said in all seriousness, referencing the fact that most practice time in during a game-intensive run is limited to scouting the opponent and shooting drills. "We had a great practice (Monday) and it's nice to get in the gym and work on things to get better."
Huse is acutely aware that getting better is crucial each time out, as the Bobcats approach the final eight games of their Big Sky Conference schedule, with seven of the conference's 11 teams owning either six or seven BSC wins. MSU faces two of the seven-team wins this weekend's road trip, battling North Dakota on Thursday before visiting Northern Colorado on Saturday.
"We're just thinking about North Dakota right now," Huse said, indicating that he feels a 72-69 win in Bozeman jus about a month ago propelled the Green and White into a hot streak while beginning a stretch of five losses in six games for the Cats. "They've played pretty well since (winning at MSU)," Huse said. "They're a veteran team and the transfers they've brought in are veterans. They've got a pretty mature outfit and you know you're going to have to paly a confident team in their place on Thursday. I thought it was a pretty hard-fought game, we just came up a little short in that one. They have a good team and can hurt you in a lot of different ways."
UND is led by explosive guard Troy Huff, who is among the Big Sky's top scorers at 17.3 points per conference contest, Alonzo Traylor shoots 64.7% from the floor, the second-best mark in the league, and Jamal Webb's 3.7 assists is seventh in the Big Sky.
The composite of the individual talent, Huse says, presents major challenges defensively. "They have a lot of different actions that require some manipulation on the defensive side," he said. "I think what makes them tought is they can score from all different spots. Like all teams in the league they'll play small but they have the capability of playing big. They bring seniors off the bench. They have a lot of talent."
UND is also dangerous defensively, averaging a league-leading 8.3 steals a game. Webb (2.2 spg) and Huff (2.1) stand atop the league's individual steals list.
Thursday's game tips off at 6:05 pm MT at the Betty Engelstad Center in Grand Forks. The Bobcats' road trip continues with a 7:05 pm game at Northern Colorado on Saturday.
