Blake Brumwell heads into his senior season as MSU's man in the middle

MSU senior brings hard work, leadership to senior season
Brian Fish has been around high-level college basketball for many years, and his top-five lists and groups of favorites feature some pretty impressive names.
That's why his recent declaration about Blake Brumwell was a head-turner.
"Blake is one of the five best leaders and teammates I've ever been around," Fish said. "He doesn't have the most ability of anyone, but in the locker room he's off the charts. Off the charts."
It's no surprise, then, that Brumwell said one of the best things about this year's squad relates to attitude more than ability.
"Our team chemistry," he said when asked the best thing about the preseason, "we've really gelled quickly. We put in a new system and it's kind of new for everyone, so it's required everyone to lock in and get back to the basics. It's required everyone to work together and we're all on the same level to start with, and that helps."
Brumwell enters his senior season at MSU as the team's likely starting center, but replacing last year's athletic and productive posts Paul Egwuonwu and Flavien Davis is not job one, he said. "Obviously Paul and Flav were talented players and they're hard to replace, but I feel like it's going to be a replacement-by-committee this year. We're going to need guys to step up, Danny and myself, a couple of freshmen, guys that didn't necessarily get a ton of minutes last year. We're going to need to step up, and there's no other way to do it other than to do it in games."
Brumwell is confident that with MSU's 12-man roster working as one, the team can perform at a high level. "Coach Fish has said that we're going to need all 12 guys on the roster to win, and it's really true. We're not picked high, which is fine with us, to fly under the radar is fine so we can hopefully surprise some people. But we're going to need 12 people to contribute every night to win games this year, that's just our style of play."
