MSU uses rebounding to spark second-half run
Brian Fish knew it might take his team a while to get going, but after halftime Montana State's big men sparked an 86-61 Bobcat win over UM Western in exhibition basketball Wednesday night at Worthington Arena.
"That tone was set by Danny (Robison) and Blake (Brumwell), who went in the locker room and just said this wasn't happening," Fish said of his team's 36-33 halftime deficit, in large part due to UMW's 26-20 rebounding advantage. "They turned that with their effort on the boards."
The result of the increased intensity was 62% shooting and a 21-to-10 rebounding margin in the second half. Five Bobcats scored in double-figures, with junior guard Marcus Colbert leading the way with 19. Senior guard Michael Dison added 15, while Robison chipped in with a dozen, Stephan Holm 11 and Zach Green 10.
MSU used a 10-3 run at the outset of the second half to take control of the game. Trailing 39-37 just less than three minutes after halftime, Dison nailed back-to-back three-pointers to give the Cats a lead they would never relinquish.
"The mentality is that we needed energy," Dison said of that spurt. I looked to provide that spark to get us going. We needed to get it up-tempo, and once we started playing hard we started pulling away."
MSU's veteran backcourt of Colbert and Dison set the tone in the second half. Each of the two scored 13 points after intermission, and they combined to shoot 10-for-13 in that period. Colbert finished the game with six assists and only two turnovers.
Newcomers had plenty of impact on the game, as well. Green, a freshman wing, logged four steals with three rebounds, while freshman forward Quinn Price grabbed six rebounds.
Montana State opens the regular season on November 14 at UCLA.
