MSU picks up two automatic qualifiers in the first meet of 2014
Montana State Track and Field launched the unofficial opening of the 2014 season at the MSU Combined Events Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, competing with cross-state rival, Montana. In the unscored meet, the Bobcats saw some very impressive initial performances, hopefully setting the bar for another successful year.
In the women's pentathlon, Montana's Lindsey Hall won with a score of 3, 541, followed by Carley McCutchen, competing unattached for MSU, with 3,530.
In third place, was Amber Amsbaugh, who has competed almost exclusively in the high jump since her arrival at Montana State, placed third with a score of 3,371. Notably, in her first time competing in the pentathlon, her overall performance not only gave her an automatic qualifier in the high jump (1.76m/5-09.25), she also picked up a qualifying score in the pentathlon, surpassing the conference requirement by 71 points.
Also joining Amsbaugh later this winter at the Big Sky Championships will be freshman Jessica Chrisp, who narrowly made the mark with 3,305 points in her first time out in Blue and Gold but also made the mark in the high jump. Transfer Danielle Muri was just shy, placing fifth with 3,216.
Sarah Snoozy (2,787), Samantha Mohl (2,733), Leah Cook (2,652) and Josephine Petruska (1,753) also competed for Montana State.
"It was great to have Amber and Jessica set the tone on Monday," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "Danielle was obviously very close and to see this collective effort the first time out is a great indicator of what we're potentially going to see this season."
The men began the heptathlon on Monday, concluding with the final three events on Tuesday. Jeff Mohl and Powhattan Williamson finished first and second, respectively, identical to their 2013 Big Sky finish, but are both competing unattached this winter. Mohl amassed 5,450 points while Williamson finished with 4,782. Newcomer Mason Storm came in third with 4,278, under the qualifying score of 4,700 for the Big Sky meet.
Montana State will debut the full 2014 squad on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Montana State Open. Both running and field events commence at 4:30 p.m. in Worthington Arena.
