MSU, Thunderbirds get together Saturday night in Cedar City
Eight days, four games, and a defining stretch of its season begins Saturday for Montana State, when the Bobcat men's basketball team visits Southern Utah. Tipoff is 7:05 pm.
MSU Game Notes vs. Southern Utah
MSU squares off with a Thunderbird squad that has lost 17 straight games, not good news according to Bobcat coach Brad Huse. "Just look at their scores," Huse said of Southern Utah's recent four-game stretch each decided by single-digits in the closing moments. They've been right there for I don't know how many games in a row, right down to the last minute. They're at home for a couple of games this week and I'm sure they're looking forward to turning the corner."
That trend continued Thursday when Southern Utah dropped a 69-61 home decision to Montana. Trey Kennedy scored 17 points for the Thunderbirds, while Kareem Jamar led all players with 25 for UM.
The Bobcats are also riding a losing streak into Saturday's game, having lost three in a row. Huse lauded his squad for continuing to compete. "We're facing some adversity, and (getting through it is) about the strength of your team internally… the mental toughness of your guys, their ability to come back and compete and have confidence. There's no special formula."
Kennedy leads the Thunderbirds with 10.9 points a game and 43 assists. He also adds 11 steals, second on the team, and his knack for getting to the free throw line (team-high 78 charity shots) and converting once there (80.8%) is a key to SUU's offense.
The Bobcats continue to benefit from offensive balance, with four players chipping in 8.5 points a game or better. Flavien Davis' 11.4 points a game paces the squad, but Marcus Colbert and Paul Egwuonwu each add 9.5 points a game.
The Bobcats have struggled to score for periods of time, though, and Huse says it needs to continue to work for high percentage shots. "I would say if we have a demon at times it's (shot selection), getting in a hurry. When you fall behind sometimes the tendency of a (competitive) player is to say I'm going to get it back right now. We've got to show more poise in those situations, work the basketball and get a high percentage shot."
The Bobcats play at SUU on Saturday before flying home on Sunday and beginning preparation for its crucial showdown with Montana on Monday. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were granted the weekend off before playing in Bozeman for the second straight year while the Bobcats travel back from Cedar City. MSU hosts Eastern Washington next Thursday and Portland State Saturday.
Huse knows regardless of what happens in the short term, considerable work remains. "It's a long season," he said, "and you can't get too high or too low. Winning on the road is a challenge, you see that every week."
