MSU visits imposing Eastern Washington at 3 pm
The task gets taller for Montana State on Saturday, when the Bobcats visit Eastern Washington for a Big Sky Conference game at 3 pm MT.
Literally.
"Eastern Washington is a very good team with excellent size," said Bobcat coach Brad Huse. "They play very well at home. This will be a challenge for us."
After playing an undersized Portland State team Thursday – in a game the Cats won 79-76 in the Stott Center – Montana State faces a team with a size advantage at nearly every position. Center Martin Seiferth, a 6-10 junior, pounded Montana for 21 points and 12 rebounds in Eastern's 69-62 win over the Grizzlies Thursday. Guards Tyler Harvey (25 points, five rebounds, four assists vs. UM) and Parker Kelly (three points) each stand 6-4.
Harvey is second in the Big Sky in scoring, averaging 20.4 points a contest, while 6-7 forward Venky Jois is 16th at 12.9 points a game. Seiferth's 7.0 rebounds a game is eighth in the Big Sky for league games.
The Eagles protected the ball masterfully in the Thursday win over Montana. Eastern converted the 13 Grizzly turnovers into 18 points, while UM only scored eight points off of takeaways. Reserve guard Keron DeShields led Montana with 17 points on 8-for-15 shooting, but no other Grizzly shot better than 50% from the floor. EWU held Grizzly starters to 11-for-28 shooting.
In contrast to Thursday's game in Cheney, where neither team topped 45% shooting, Montana State's game at Portland State was a shootout. MSU shot 56% from the floor, while PSU shot 54.5%. Four of MSU's five starters hit more than half their field goal attempts.
Maintaining that shooting touch isn't the only challenge facing the Bobcats Saturday at Cheney's Reese Court. After traveling from Portland to Spokane on Friday, the Cats practiced in the afternoon then prep for a game Saturday at 2 pm PT. "It's a quick turnaround so that's a challenge," Huse said. "But playing on the road is always a challenge. This will be no different."
After Saturday's game against Eastern Washington (6-8, 1-2 in the Big Sky) the Bobcats (8-6, 3-0) host league-leading Northern Colorado on Thursday at 7 pm.
