Academic Progress Rates among some of nation's best
The Montana State Men's Cross Country and Women's Tennis teams were publicly recognized by the NCAA for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) on Wednesday. The recognition from the NCAA is based on 2011-12 data.
This recognition marks the second time in program history for the cross country squad, after earning the acknowledgement for the 2010-11 academic year. The men's cross country team, led by longtime coach Dale Kennedy boasted six All-Academic Big Sky honorees that season and as a team were named one of 147 men's teams named an All-Academic squad by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Their team GPA ranked sixth in the nation.
For the third straight year, the Montana State women's tennis team has earned the national recognition. Under the direction of 14-year veteran head coach Denise Albrecht, the Bobcats have advanced to the league's postseason tournament on 13 occasions. This spring, the squad was led by junior Ellie Crum, who posted a team-high 11 victories in singles action. In addition, the Great Falls native earned Capital One/CoSIDA District VII Academic At-Large First-Team kudos.
“We're very proud of both of these programs,” said Director of Athletics Peter Fields. “As the name states, they're 'student-athletes,' and they've proven that, in the classroom as well as on the field of competition. Considering this is a repeat recognition for both teams, it speaks highly of our coaches and support staff and their emphasis on success.”
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year's release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e., Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision).
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
