Williamson finishes fifth in decathlon
Two Bobcat multis careers came to a close on Friday at the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while a third continues to grow and improve. (Decathlon Scores | Heptathlon Scores | Decathlon/Heptathlon Results - Day 2)
After a bit of a rigid state on the opening day, Sadie McMillan and Kortnee Barrett needed a strong day two. While that may not have been the exact case in Forest Grove, Ore. on Thursday, there were certainly high points in the heptathlon that day.
McMillan bumped up one spot to finish 11th overall with 4,370 points, after sitting in 12th at the close of day one. Her highest finish of the day was a ninth place performance in the javelin with a distance of 30.22m (99-02). The senior's weekend is over yet, however, as she'll compete one more time in the 100 hurdles on Friday.
Kortnee Barrett jumped two spots to finish 17th overall with 4,122 points, after sitting in last place after four events. Barrett's final collegiate race was certainly a memorable one when she placed seventh in the 800 with a lifetime best time of 2:25.97.
Portland State's Joenish Vinson won the women's heptathlon with 5,488 points.
Pow Williamson finished his decathlon in fifth place with 6,228 points. He started the day off tremendously strong placing second in the 110 hurdles behind overall leader Austin Emry. His time of 14.89 was just four one-hundredths of a second off his lifetime best time set earlier this spring. In the discus and pole vault, he placed eighth in both, and finished last in the field in the pole vault.
In the final event, the 1,500, he came in fourth with a time of 4:56.17. His performance was solid enough to secure his fifth place position that he held headed into the final event. Williamson improved upon his ninth place finish just one year ago.
Emry ended as the Big Sky champion with 7,010 points.
The full slate of events for the Big Sky Championships begins tomorrow, Friday May 10, beginning at 11:30 a.m. (MDT) with the men's hammer throw and 3:15 p.m. for the running events, starting with the women's 3,000 steeplechase. The meet can be seen on Big Sky TV and will also have live results available.
