Senior thrower punches ticket for the NCAA Championships

After a weather delay on Friday, the hammer throw got moved to Saturday but that didn't stop David Phillips from a strong performance at the NCAA West Regional Preliminary meet.

Phillips placed 11th overall in the hammer throw to advance to his first NCAA Championship. His throw of 63.66m (208-10) sealed his fate in Austin, Texas after placing 13th just one year ago and missing the championship cutoff by one place.

Sean Ferriter also competed on Saturday and came in 40th overall. It was his first appearance at the regional meet.

"This was a huge day for David," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "He's been a huge asset to our throwers since day one at MSU and for him to finally make it to the championship is a great way to end such a successful collegiate career."

The NCAA Championships will have two Bobcats in tow when Phillips is joined by Grant Grosvenor who placed ninth in the 800. The championship will take place June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
