Automatic qualifiers still on the line for Track and Field
Sunny California will undoubtedly provide warmer temperatures for Montana State which will hopefully result in red-hot performances at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge hosted by Sacramento State in Hornet Stadium. (Meet Schedule | Heat Sheets)
Although each meet is significant for the sake of earning automatic qualifiers for the Big Sky Championships, the Mondo Challenge will also stand as a measurement to see where the program ranks against some of the prominent mid-majors in Division I track and field. Headed into the meet, Montana State has 10 women and 20 men qualified for the conference meet, which will take place in early May.
The Bobcats are sending some of their finest to the Golden State in the three-day, championship format meet. The weekend will be kicked off today, Thursday, Apr. 11, with the Multi Events where Powhattan Williamson will represent the Blue and Gold in the decathlon.
Along with meet host Sac State, MSU will face off with Brigham Young, UC Davis, Detroit, Nevada and Cal Poly. Big Sky Conference member Portland State will also be competing in the scored meet.
“This is a great opportunity for the team to perform in a really competitive environment,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “I don't think this is a situation where we'll be overwhelmed but who we're facing but it will put us in a position where we're challenged to step up.”
Thursday's decathlon events are slated for a 12:15 p.m. (PDT) start, followed by an 11 a.m. start on Friday. Field events also commence on Friday, beginning with the women's discus at 3:15 p.m. and have a 10:15 a.m. start on Saturday with the women's hammer throw. The running events will start on Friday with the distance races beginning at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the final day will begin at 11 a.m.
