MSU, Bears face off on Saturday night in Worthington Arena
With its first home conference loss in the rear view mirror, Montana State looks to rebound Saturday night when Northern Colorado visits Worthington Arena.
MSU Game Notes vs. Northern Colorado
The Bobcats will face one of the more productive one-two punches in the Big Sky. Tate Unruh leads the Bears from the outside, averaging a team-high 12.3 points per game and standing 17th in the nation in both three-pointers per game (3.0) and three-point shooting (43.4%). While Unruh provides lightning strikes, forward Derrick Barden brings the thunder, averaging 8.8 rebounds a game and 11.7 bruising points, most of which come close to the basket. He shoots 52.8% from the floor.
“Northern Colorado is a very difficult team to defend,” said MSU coach Brad Huse. “They shoot the three-pointer very well as a team, and Barden is a tremendous physical presence inside. They can attack you in a number of ways.”
The Bears bring a 6-14 overall mark into play Friday, and like the Bobcats are battling for entry into and seeding in the Big Sky Tournament as part of a pack of teams behind Montana and Weber State. The Bobcats are 7-6 in the league and tied for fourth, one game behind Southern Utah. Northern Colorado is 4-9 and tied for eighth with Eastern Washington. In between stand 6-7 NAU and Sac State.
In all, six teams have between six and nine losses, which means a half-dozen teams enter Saturday battling in earnest for the final four tournament berths, with two other teams only one game off that pace. But Brad Huse said his concern for long-range goals such as the post-season relate only to the next task on the list.
“We have every game circled on our calendar,” he said. “The most important game we play is the next game, and we're going to prepare for Northern Colorado like we do every game – as if it's the most important game we'll play.”
