Hot-shooting first half pace Miners
UTEP used a hot-shooting first half that included a 9-2 run at its mid-point in racing past Montana State 70-55 in El Paso on Monday.
The home-standing Miners shot 54% before intermission, at which point UTEP had built a 40-23 lead, and Cedrick Lang keyed the key first-half run with an and-one layup on his way to a 10-point, 13-rebound performance off the bench. MSU's halftime deficit was "two parts them, two parts us," said Bobcat coach Brad Huse.
"They shot the ball much better in the first half than we would have anticipated, but in the second half we forced them into more shots we wanted them to take. Offensively, we didn't have the ability to finish plays in the first half," Huse said. "We got ourselves to the line in the first half, but we had a tough half scoring the ball (because of) missed free throws and three-pointers."
The Bobcats hit just two-of-seven free throw attempts before halftime, which included missed one-and-one opportunities, and finished with just nine made free throws on the night to UTEP's 18. MSU also shot just 39% in the first half.
In a statistical fluke, each team shot better outside the three-point circle than inside it. UTEP hit 48% of its shots from the field but 50% of its three-pointers, while MSU shot 35% overall and 38% from beyond the arc.
UTEP's Julian Washburn led all players with 20 points. Terrell Brown scored 10 to lead the Bobcats, while Paul Egwuonwu grabbed eight rebounds.
