In the final five-minutes of the opening half, the Wildcats went on a 13-0 run and never looked back; en route to a 79-55 win over MSU in the opening round of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic.
Villanova (6-0) took a 40-26 lead into intermission and opened the second stanza on a 17-2 run in the first four minutes to cruise to the win. The Wildcats shot 52 percent from the field, including a blistering 64 percent in the second half.
"We opened the game playing team ball," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "When things started tightening up, our balance and spacing went away. I thought we became more individual with our play. We're a better team than what we showed."
Montana State (3-2) was led for the second straight game by sophomore forward Jasmine Hommes, who dropped a team-best 13 points. Also in double-figures was sophomore forward Kayla DeWit, who came off the bench for 10 points.
"Our posts are doing a good job," Binford said. "We need to get more from our guards. They have the ability to knock down the shots."
For the game, MSU shot 32 percent from the field and out-rebounded Villanova 40-37. The Bobcats were led under the glass by Lindsay Stockton and Kalli Durham with eight and six rebounds, respectively. Stockton also dished out a team-high five assists.
MSU will play Valparaiso on Sunday at 11 a.m. (MST) in the consolation game.
