MSU uses strong second half to seal victory
Montana State opened the second half with a 9-2 run and never looked back, securing its first victory of the season with a 59-54 decision against Central Michigan on Friday.
Sophomore forward Terrell Brown, who scored 15 total points in MSU's first three games of the season, exploded for 23 points to lead all players, while Paul Egwuonwu added 13 points and grabbed 13 boards. The Bobcats used their second-best shooting half and biggest rebounding margin of the season to fuel the comeback.
Trailing 29-18 coming out of intermission Michael Dison converted an and-one layup and Terrell Brown hit a jumper to begin the second half, and Brown's three-pointer with 12:38 to play gave MSU its first lead since the game's opening moments. The teams traded leads, for about three-and-a-half minutes, but Brown's three at 8:28 began a 10-2 run that put MSU in the catbird seat to stay. He hit seven of his 23 points during that run.
The Bobcats finished the game strong, hitting nine of their 10 free throws in the game's final 45 seconds to keep the home-standing Chippewas at arm's length. MSU out-rebounded Central Michigan, now 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in its weekend tournament, 40-33, which includes a 25-16 margin in the second half.
MSU is now 1-3 with the win, and 1-1 in the CMU tournament. The Cats face Austin Peay Saturday at 3:30 pm MT.
