A look back at MSU's win over NAU

HEAD COACH ROB ASH: Rob Ash is available during Tuesday's media lunch at noon in the Hall of Fame. Two players and an assistant coach are generally also present for interviews during the media lunch. ASSISTANT COACHES: One MSU assistant coach is generally available during the media lunch each Tuesday at 11:45 am to begin the weekly interview session. Others are available by appointment during the week, typically in the late mornings and evening. STUDENT-ATHLETES: All Bobcat player interviews are handled on Tuesday. The only exception is for players requested prior to Tuesday who have academic obligations during interview availabilities. One player from each offense and defense is available during the media lunch, with brief (mostly electronic media) interviews prior to practice and other interview availabilities after practice. UNAVAILABLE PLAYERS: True freshmen and injured players do not conduct interviews without the approval of Coach Ash. CAT-GRIZ WEEK: Captains only.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Offense – RB Cody Kirk (5-10, 225, Sr, Frenchtown, MT)
Montana State senior Cody Kirk accomplished what none of Northern Arizona's three FCS opponents had been able to on Saturday, battering the Lumberjacks' rush defense for 156 yards and a touchdown in Montana State's 36-7 win on Saturday. Kirk and MSU's offense dominated the NAU defense which had allowed its three FCS foes just 76.7 yards a game on the ground, but Kirk had rushed for 101 yards by halftime. Kirk helped the Bobcats set the tone for the game on MSU's first offensive possession, when he four times for 26 yards on MSU's 51-yard scoring drive. Nine of Kirk's 27 rushing attempts on the afternoon resulted in first downs, and his touchdown was the 40th on the ground in his career. His 11 rushing touchdowns in 2013 is tied for the most in the Big Sky.
Defense – CB Deonte Flowers (5-11, 183, Jr, San Diego, CA)
Montana State's junior cornerback was part of a dominating performance by the Bobcat defense, as MSU shut down the Big Sky's top statistical performer at his position for the second straight week. Saturday MSU limited Northern Arizona to 232 total yards, 168 in the air, and Flowers recorded seven total tackles, six solos, with three pass breakups.
Special Teams – Shawn Johnson (5-9, 175, Jr, Bakersfield, CA)
Montana State's most versatile offense player, Shawn Johnson made one of the signature plays of Saturday's 36-7 Bobcat win over #15 Northern Arizona. Moments after NAU had scored for the first time on an interception return, Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give MSU a 36-7 lead and end the game's scoring. Johnson's return marked the first kickoff Montana State had brought back for a score since 2008, and only the third 100-yard return in school history. The junior also returned three punts for 54 yards, and logged a 246-yard all-purpose yardage afternoon, and he is now 10th in all-purpose yards in the FCS this year with 924 yards on only 92 attempts. Johnson is also now 15th in the FCS in punt returns, and is up to seventh in the Big Sky in rushing yards per game.

• Cody Kirk's 156-yard rushing day raises his season total to 500 yards and his career mark to 2,834, the fourth-best total in school history.
• Kirk's 156 yards rushing Saturday were more than any of NAU's three FCS opponents had gained as a team.
• Shawn Johnson has 924 all-purpose yards in 2013 on just 92 attempts.
• The three-yard fourth-quarter pass Tanner Bleskin caught from his brother Jake on Saturday gave the senior receiver 170 catches in his Bobcat career, a new school record.
• Montana State leads the Big Sky in sacks in 2013, but didn't log one against NAU.
• Likewise, the Bobcats did not allow a sack Saturday, and the seven it has allowed this year is fourth-best in the Big Sky.
• Daly's one sack Saturday moved him into a tie for fourth in MSU history with 29 career saks, and his nine this season is good for a 10th-place tie on the single-season list through only five games.

• Brad Daly's lone tackle-for-loss extended his streak to 14 straight games with at least one TFL.
