MSU places three-game winning streak on the line Thursday in Greeley
Montana State leaves its comfort zone this weekend, traveling unfamiliar environs when it faces Northern Colorado on Thursday and Big Sky Conference newcomer North Dakota on Saturday.
MSU Game Notes vs. NC MSU Player Updates
Bobcat head coach Brad Huse knows his team hasn't won away from Bozeman yet this season, and he knows there's no time like the present to start. “It is a pretty fresh group when you look at it,” he said. “Not many have played conference games at all, so it's new to most of them. You need to have some success along the way to create that confidence.”
In spite of starting three players in their first season in the program, Montana State grabbed a pair of home wins last weekend to even its Big Sky Conference record at 2-2. Huse said that not only the wins, but how they transpired, could boost the team's fortunes. “We won in two different ways – we gave up a big lead, and came back from a big deficit,” Huse said. “But the bottom line is we got two wins, and the guys will gain confidence from that.”
One of the most important moments of MSU's young season came late in the team's comeback against Eastern Washington on Saturday. The team trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half before riding a late charge to the overtime victory. “It's more about what they said to each other and how they stayed together” than any external motivation, Huse said. “Even down 15 with 16 minutes to go they hung together. They were united throughout.”
Each of Montana State's two weekend opponents reside in the same general vicinity of the current Big Sky standings as do the Bobcats. The Bears and UND each stand 1-3 entering the contest. Huse knows that challenges await.
“We're on the road, which is always tough in the league,” he said. “Northern Colorado has such a large number of returning players from last year, they have experience. We haven't been to North Dakota, and that is a challenge.”
Montana State and the Bears tip off in Greeley at 7:05 pm Thursday. The game is televised by Altitude Sports, and is also available on the Bobcat Radio Network.
