Big week pays off for veteran track and field stars
The Big Sky Conference selected two Bobcats as Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Heather Haug and Jeff Mohl took the honors after an impressive week of competition.
Haug was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week following a second consecutive week of record breaking performances. Haug set a new program record in the 800 at the MSU Open in Bozeman on Friday, Jan. 25. Her time of 2:08.62 bested the previous record of 2:09.13 set in 1988 by Christy Otte. Haug's time also qualified her for her fourth event at the Big Sky Conference Championships, which will take place in Bozeman at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
Haug set a new program record in the mile during the first week of indoor competition earlier this season. The Livingston, Mont. native is ranked seventh in the nation in the 800 and eighth in the mile.
Mohl earned Field Athlete of the Week honors for his epic performance at the Cougar Multis, hosted by Washington State. His score of 5,462 marked a second-best score of the season and he won the heptathlon despite sustaining an ankle sprain during the 1,000 meter run. He is currently ranked seventh in the nation in the heptathlon and defeated fifth-ranked Austin Emry of Montana, for the second time in 2013.
Montana State returns to action this Friday, when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Mountain States Games; a two-day meet hosted by Idaho State.
