Murphy's hammer throw championship highlights day
Day three at a college conference track and field meet is a multi-tasker's dream. Montana State's Jeff Mohl is just the man for the job. (Men's Results Day 1 | Women's Results Day 1)
Mohl, who wrapped up the Big Sky Conference decathlon championship on Thursday, finished second in the long jump, fourth in the pole vault, and eighth in the javelin. Mohl's effort led the Bobcat efforts that landed the team in first place after day three of the four-day event.
MSU senior Amanda Murphy highlighted the day by winning the women's hammer throw by a tie-breaker over Northern Arizona's Lauren Stuart. The victory left the emotional Murphy momentarily speechless. “I was really excited about (the opening throw, which ended up as her best),” she said. “I've never opened that well before, and I felt really good.”
Montana State's women stand fourth after day three.
Ryan Kropp, a Bobcat sophomore, increased his season's best mark by six inches to take second in the pole vault. Freshman Jake Turner finished seventh in the steeplechase, Trevor Gilreath finished second and David Phillips third in the men's shot put, Dan Jackson second and Carl Nystuen, in an impressive and exhaustive kick to the finish, grabbed fifth in the 10,000.
Men advancing to finals Saturday include: Chris Wilson, 100 m, first and 200 m first; Gage Pickering, 100 m, tied for seventh and 200, seventh; Grant Grosvenor, 800 m, second; Matt Tex, 800 m, fourth; Nick Melone, 400 hurdles, sixth.
MSU women advancing include: Chantel Jaeger, 200 m, eighth; Madeline Fuchs, 400 hurdles, second; Katie Niemir, 400 hurdles, third; Heather Haug, 800 m, first; Lierin Flanaga, 800 m, fifth.
Mohl's day was marked by ups and downs, which the junior said suits him. “That's the best thing I get out of (multi-event competition) is the ability to drop something I do bad in. I didn't get the mark I wanted in the pole vault, and I was upset for about three minutes but then I had to get ready for the next event.”
His busy Friday, on the heels of the two-day decathlon, left Mohl “pretty beat up and tired, but I'm ready for the relays” on Saturday. The final day of the 2012 Big Sky Championships with field events at 11 am and running events at 12:30 pm at the Bobcat Track Complex.
