The Montana State women’s tennis team finally got outdoors for the first time this season, playing three matches against nationally ranked squads during its Spring Break trip to Hawaii, last week.
The Montana State women's tennis team finally got outdoors for the first time this season, playing three matches against nationally ranked squads during its Spring Break trip to Hawaii, last week.
“In our first match we were like fish out of water,” said MSU head coach Denise Albrecht. “Playing at sea level and in windy conditions was challenging. But, we continued to get better in each match and we competed against quality opponents.”
MSU opened play against NCAA Division II power BYU-Hawaii and suffered a 7-0 setback. The Bobcats went on to be swept by No. 58 Hawaii and No. 59 Wyoming, as well.
“In the beginning of the week and against No. 1-ranked BYU-Hawaii we only captured nine games in singles play,” Albrecht said. “At the end of the week against a very solid and ranked Wyoming squad we won 23 games. It was exciting to see the improvement, especially outdoors.”
Montana State will travel to Arizona this weekend to face Grand Canyon College on Friday, before playing its second Big Sky Conference match of the season against Northern Arizona on Saturday. MSU is currently 1-0 in league play.
