Shawn Reid scores career-high 31 points
Shawn Reid scored 31 points for Montana State, but it wasn't enough to overcome Weber State's balance as the Wildcats earned a 79-70 win in Bozeman on Wednesday.
Reid's career-high scoring output was the most by a Bobcat this season, but the Wildcats shot 54% from the floor with four players in double-digits and forced 16 MSU turnovers. Weber State limited the Bobcats to 43% shooting from the floor, 23% from beyond the arc, in the team's first game without leading scorer Xavier Blount, who suffered injuries over the weekend.
“I like the way our guys fought, I like the character they showed,” said MSU coach Brad Huse. “Our guys continued to fight hard, and played a pretty efficient (second) half.”
Weber State took control of the game early, building a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the game when Kyle Tresnak converted a three-point play. Weber increased its lead to as many as 18 late in the second half, and that was the margin it took into the intermission. The Wildcats shot 58% in the first half, limiting MSu to 33%, including just one three-pointer.
Two-and-a-half minutes into the second half Weber State retained its 18-point lead, but things began to turn. Reid's layup at 17:23 launched a 16-0 run and when Singleton converted a three-point play and Reid hit a jumper the Bobcats pulled to within two, 48-46, at 13:16. In that stretch Damian Lillard, WSU's all-league guard, and Kyle Bullinger each drew their third fouls.
“They had some foul issues, I think that helped, but we were being a lot tighter offensively,” Huse said. “We were loose (with the ball) in the first half, Weber had something to do with that, but we turned the ball over and didn't shoot well. Weber was pretty efficient to start the game, and that hole was hard to come out of.”
Jordan Richardson answered MSU's long run with his only basket of the game, a three-pointer, which started a 10-0 Wildcat run that returned control of the game to the league leaders. MSU never got closer than six the rest of the game.
Lillard finished with 17 points, far below his nation-leading average, and in two games against the Bobcats this year scored only 34 points combined. Byron Fulton scored 17 points for Weber State, while Scott Bamforth added 15 and Kyle Tresnak 14.
Reid's 31 poitns came on 12-for-15 shooting, including 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. Reid also grabbed seven rebounds, but turned the ball over seven times. Mohamed Fall scored 13 points and blocked three shots.
