Colbert, Moon lead MSU
Freshman Marcus Colbert scored 17 points and dished out seven assists and senior Christian Moon scored 21 in his second game of the season, leading Montana State to a 101-70 win over Northwest Indian in Bozeman on Saturday.
Colbert helped engineer an efficient night offensive night by the Bobcats, as the team shot 54.2% from the floor and 47.6% from three-point range. MSU coach Brad Huse was pleased with his freshman point guard. “Marcus is more than capable,” Huse said. “I thought he made some great reads in the second half using on-ball (screens). He just keeps getting better and better.”
Huse was pleased with how his team performed without its three leading scorers. Senior wings Xavier Blount (injury) and Jamie Stewart (suspension) and junior guard Antonio Biglow (suspension) were each absent from MSU's lineup. “Obviously we faced a little adversity,” Huse said. “I'm pleased the guys competed hard. Offensively we got on a roll, and that was good to see. We have a lot of talent on this team, but it is about the team.”
Each team started fast offensively, and the Eagles led 21-16 after Josh Nelson's short jumper at the 11:44 mark. But the Bobcats scored seven straight and never trailed again. The Bobcats pushed the lead to 11 at halftime on a nifty layup by Blake Brumwell with the assist by Colbert.
Montana State used a 12-2 run at the outset of the second half to blow the game open, and the Eagles never cut the margin below 15. Seven Bobcats posted season scoring highs, and the team's 101 points was the most of 2012-13. Michael Dison and Calen Coleman each finished with 14 points, while Jeff Budinich added 11 to round out five double-digit scorers.
MSU's only offensive sore spot was 18 turnovers, although the Bobcats forced 23.
Montana State returns to Big Sky play on Thursday, hosting Portland State at 7:05 pm.
