MSU faces South Dakota School of Mines in only practice tilt
The lights will be a little brighter Saturday when Montana State plays its only exhibition game of 2012-13, and Brad Huse is ready to see his squad play live for the first time.
"I'm excited to see how the guys respond to playing with the lights on and people in the stands," said MSU's head men's coach of his team's 7 pm exhibition game Saturday against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Worthington Arena. "Our quality depth has made for a competitive pre-season and we're going to need that depth as we're a little banged up right now and have a few guys out."
Huse has emphasized defense throughout the fall, and he said his squad carries that mentality into competition. "Our approach Saturday begins with our defense, and our alertness and aggressiveness on that end. If we have that, everything else will fall into place and our offense will feed off that effort."
Huse said he plans to start the high-energy backcourt of freshman Marcus Colbert and junior college transfer Antonio Biglow, with Jamie Stewart and either Xavier Blount or freshman Danny Robison at the forward spots, and Paul Egwuonwu in the middle.
Huse said a starting lineup with three or four newcomers presents both challenges and plenty of upside. "I'm a little unsure of our rotations going into the game, but that will take shape as the night progresses. It's still really early and we'll continue to evaluate our rotations and lineups as we look at the regular season starting in a little over a week. It's an exhibition game but we're going to treat this like the other 29 regular season games and try to win first and foremost while we work to establish this team's identity."
South Dakota Mines split its two exhibition games on the season. The Hardrockers dropped a 78-68 decision to Montana Tech in Butte, while topping Great Falls 62-60 in the Electric City.
