Big plays lift No. 6 Eastern Washington
Eastern Washington used a blocked punt recovery in the end zone and an interception return for a touchdown on Saturday to beat Montana State 27-24 in Big Sky action.
The second-ranked Bobcats led 17-13 on a 1-yard run by Tray Robinson at the end of the third quarter before Evan Day recovered a punt blocked by teammate Dylan Zylstra to put the sixth-ranked Eagles ahead 20-17 early in the fourth quarter. Less than a minute later, Jordan Tonani returned an interception 21 yards to put the game out of reach.
The win upped EWU's league record to 4-0 for the first time in team history. Overall, the Eagles are 5-1, same as MSU, which dropped to 3-1 in league play.
EWU managed just 211 total yards, 71 on the ground. The Bobcats recorded sacks by Caleb Schreibeis (2), Brad Daly and Brian Bignell. Additionally, Na'a Moeakiola and Darius Jones got interceptions on what would ordinarily be a stellar defensive performance.
On offense, MSU's DeNarius McGhee became the school's all-time leader in career touchdown passes throwing a 2-yard toss to Lee Perkins for the first score of the game, and then another 2-yarder to Jon Ellis with 2:38 left in the game that accounted for the final score. The junior now has 61 scoring passes, breaking the record of 60 set by Kelly Bradley in the mid-1980s.
For the game, McGhee hit 28 of 36 passes for 294 yards. Tanner Bleskin was his main receiver, hauling in seven passes for 96 yards. MSU gained 365 total yards and had 27 first downs to 13 for EWU.
Tray Robinson was MSU's leading rusher with 58 yards on 21 carries.
MSU has a bye this week before playing host to league newcomer North Dakota on Oct. 27. EWU plays host to Sacramento State this week.
