For the fifth time in the past six seasons the Montana State women's basketball program has ranked among the top academic teams in the nation at the NCAA Division I level. The Bobcats ranked 12th in the country for the 2010-11 season, announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on Monday afternoon.
As a team, MSU recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.419, which also ranked No. 1 for all Big Sky Conference teams. South Dakota State earned the top spot with a 3.666 team GPA.
“I'm proud of our student-athletes,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “They take great pride in the classroom as well as on the court. They work extremely hard academically, and this was an exceptionally challenging season due to a demanding road schedule.”
Five Bobcats earned 2011 Big Sky Conference All Academic honors, including Sarah Balian, Chelsea Banis, Katie Bussey, Lyndi Seidensticker and Rachel Semansky. Balian also garnered Big Sky Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year accolades, as well.
Montana State has ranked as high as fourth in the nation in the classroom on two occasions, 2006-07 and 2008-09.
