Known as one of the West Coast’s Top Developers of talent during his time as a high school and AAU Coach in Southern California, Julius Smith joined Matt Logie’s first Bobcat coaching staff for the 2023-24 season.
Smith worked as an assistant coach during Logie’s four seasons at Point Loma, helping the Sea Lions to a 82-23 record (61-10 in the PacWest Conference) with four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. This past season culminated in a 29-4 finish that saw the Sea Lions win 24 in a row en route to an undefeated conference record (20-0). Smith has also helped to recruit and develop 15 All-Conference Players and a three-time PacWest Player of the Year and Multi-Year All-American in Kaden Anderson. During his time at Point Loma, Smith was slated as one of the Best Division 2 Assistant Coaches by Silver Waves Media. Smith also helped student athletes excel in the classroom, maintaining a 3.4 GPA during his time at Point Loma.
Prior to Point Loma, Smith spent four seasons at Riverside Poly High School where he was a part of compiling a record of 84-38. While at Riverside Poly, Smith worked with and helped develop multiple collegiate players, such as Lamont Butler (San Diego State), DJ Davis (Butler), and Chance Stephens (Maryland). Smith has also been a part of big time Southern California AAU programs, Cali Rebels and West Coast Elite, and helped multiple players move on to the collegiate level.
Smith, when asked about this opportunity to be a Bobcat: “The word that keeps echoing in my head is GRATEFUL. I have truly been blessed with a network of people who have poured into me and helped me grow and give in all the right ways! The chance to work at an elite institution like Montana State was not one that I could pass up. The recent success has shown that the people and resources are in place to be highly successful here for years to come. I am elated to continue working beside Coach Logie, as he is family, and someone that I truly believe in. Cannot wait to hit the ground running with our staff and players and continue building this program the Bobcat way!”
Before getting into coaching, Smith played at William Jessup University for three seasons. While there, Smith got his BA in English, with an emphasis on Creative Writing. Smith also owns a MA Degree in English Literature from California Baptist University. Recently married, Smith and his wife reside in beautiful Bozeman and look forward to their new adventure as newlyweds.
