Heinz Takes Second, Bobcats Finish Fourth at Branch Law Firm/McGuire Invitational

Heinz cards eighth-lowest 54-hole score in program history in successful start to season
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Montana State senior golfer Eva Heinz earned her second-straight runner-up finish at the Branch Law Firm/McGuire Invitational to lead the Bobcats to fourth place at the UNM Championship Course on Tuesday.
The Bobcats finished 11-over 875 with rounds of 288-299-288 to post the sixth-lowest 54-hole team score in program history. The Cats' 288 in the third round matched their best-ever round on the UNM Championship Course, which was set during Monday morning's first round. Montana State made a statement against a strong field, besting competitive teams such as Cal State Fullerton (5th – 887), Sacramento State (6th – 889), and preseason Big Sky favorite Northern Arizona (7th – 891) in Albuquerque.
On the individual leaderboard, Heinz matched the eighth-lowest 54-hole individual score in program history at 6-under 210 with counting rounds of 69-73-68. Sophomore Ashleigh Wilson also counted all three of her rounds in a successful week in Albuquerque, tying for 16th at 3-over 219 (73-74-72). Junior Nadia Sanz Ouezzani, who competed individually, tied for 28th at 6-over 222 in her Bobcat and Division I golf debut. Lauren Nau (226) tied for 41st, Sailor Graham (230) earned a share of 52nd place, and Norah Seidl (232) tied for 61st to round out the Bobcats' competitors in their season-opening tournament.
"Fourth place in a strong field on a demanding golf course is a great start to our fall season," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "I'm really proud of the grit this team showed, especially shooting even-par in both the first and final rounds. We challenged them with a birdie goal today, and they exceeded it—that's exactly the response we want. Eva had an outstanding tournament, finishing second in a very competitive field, and we had players put together under-par and even-par rounds. The work they've been putting in is showing.
"We still have areas to clean up, especially through the middle of day one, but I really like what I'm seeing from this group. It's a great start to our season, and we need to keep giving ourselves opportunities to be competitive. We have a couple days to review stats and do some prep work so we are ready for the Yellowstone Intercollegiate. We're excited to be home competing next week."
The Cats finished the final four holes of Monday's lightning-suspended second round on Tuesday morning and remained in fourth place as a team at the conclusion of the round. Montana State carded a team score of 11-over 299 in the round, counting a 73 from Heinz, a 74 from Wilson, a 75 from Seidl, and a 77 from Graham. Sanz Ouezzani, who competed as an individual, posted a Bobcat-best score of 72 in the second round behind 12-straight par-or-better holes and four birdies. Heinz birdied on holes 1 and 13 with two strings of five consecutive par-or-better holes in her round. Wilson birdied four times in the round, including back to back on holes 13 and 14. Seidl went bogey free on her final 11 holes, highlighted by birdies on holes 14 and 17. Graham birdied twice in her first three holes on Nos. 4 and 6 and added six-straight pars on Nos. 11 through 16.
The Cats matched their first-round score of 288 in the tournament's third and final round, led by Heinz with her tournament-low round of 68. The Bobcats also counted a 72 from Wilson and 74s from Nau and Seidl, while Sanz Ouezzani posted a 71 in her individual round. Heinz posted five birdies to just one bogey in the third round, with her round marking the 17th lowest in program history. Wilson carded five birdies to seal her lowest round of the tournament. Nau birdied four times in the third round and shot par or better on her final four holes to wrap up the tournament. Seidl posted six-straight bogey-free rounds across holes 7 through 12 and sunk birdies on Nos. 11 and 14, as well as her second eagle of the tournament on hole 18. Sanz Ouezzani posted two birdies and just one bogey to card her best round in Albuquerque.
UNLV (10-under 854) took home the team title over No. 13 Pepperdine (-9) by one stroke, with New Mexico finishing third at 3-under 861. The Bobcats took fourth place over Cal State Fullerton by 12 strokes, posting an 875 to the fifth-place Titans' 887.
Pepperdine's Kylee Choi earned medalist honors thanks to her 54-hole score of 10-under 208, with Heinz placing second at 6-under 210. New Mexico's Ausanee Udkamtiang and Ava Cepeda and Pepperdine's Irene Kim finished in a three-way tie for third place at 4-under 212.
The Bobcats return home on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21-22, as they look to defend their individual and team titles at the Yellowstone Intercollegiate. The tournament will be held at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman.
