The match featured 21 ties and ten lead changes over the course of the one-hour, 40-minute contest.
UNLV senior Alondra Alarcon, a 5-11 outside hitter from Lima, Peru, knocked down 14 kills behind a .636 attack mark to lift the Rebels to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 win over Montana State on the second day of the ASICS Invitational hosted by Oregon State in Gill Coliseum.
The match featured 21 ties and ten lead changes over the course of the one-hour, 40-minute contest.
UNLV (5-2) outhit Montana State (4-4) .265 to 206, while also holding advantages in kills, aces, and digs.
"Our good has been really, pretty good, but similar to some other matches, the ability to sustain that length of play is something we haven't put together yet," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "We need get to a space of playing a good brand of volleyball and having everyone doing their jobs over the entirety of a match."
MSU played even with UNLV in sets one and three until the midway mark. The Rebels used an 8-2 run down the stretch in the opening set and a 9-2 run in the third, en route to the sweep. A Camryn Greenwald kill in the second set tied the contest at 23-all, but UNLV closed out the win on an ace by Jaida Harris.
"We had some chances and were in control and then we would just kind of lose it," Houk said. "Right now, we're giving up streaks of 4-5 points when we don't play up to our standards. We've been digging ourselves a hole and then scrapping and clawing to get back to good place."
Karli Heidemann led MSU with a team-high 12 kills, while Elli Tufto and Greenwald added eight and six, respectively. Freshman setter Maggie Rhew dished out 27 assists, while libero Lauren Lindseth and Nicolette Noble anchored the backrow with nine kills, each. Junior Jolie Spelts paced the Bobcats at the net with a match-high five blocks. She also added five kills.
The Bobcats close out weekend play Saturday at 12 p.m. (MT) against UC Irvine.
